Have you ever heard of Cyclospora, the microscopic one-celled parasite. You probably have now since 11 states and hundreds of people have been affected. The CDC is still trying to nail down the source of the outbreak but as of now most cases have been identified in Iowa. The CDC is leaning toward fresh vegetables and not fruit.
The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test can detect Cyclospora and is commercially available and a very accurate method to make a diagnosis.
The CDC is recommending that people be careful by taking precautions to wash any fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly until we know the food source that is causing the outbreak.
